A high-quality album from Waylon Jennings, Dreaming My Dreams begins with the quirky Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?, a world-weary questioning of the hard life of the touring musician combined with a sly nod to the way Jennings and the rest of the Outlaw Country crowd were warping the parameters of the country at the time. Concluding with the stirring Bob Wills Is Still the King - with nods to the likes of Willie Nelson - the album is both a hot as hell country music album and a rumination on what country is and what it means to Jennings

Along with Willie's And Then I Wrote (oft disguised in dollar bins everywhere as The Best of Willie Nelson with the cup of coffee album cover) it was this record that really made me the country music defender/champion I am today.

By FAR his best work, and for me the definitive 70s outlaw cowboy album. I found all the wit, wisdom and assurance of Let It Bleed and Blood on the Tracks here, slowed and simplified in Waylon's casual cadence.

A door opening record for any music fan with country leanings.

While it's a little more uneven than the genre-defining Honky Tonk Heroes, Dreaming My Dreams is full of understated beauty.  Jennings sounds weary in his delivery, even melancholy, but he doesn't lack for passion.  Particularly on the disarming "Dreaming My Dreams With You", which recalls Roy Orbison's 60's singles.  Other highlights include "I've Been a Long Time Leaving", "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" and "Bob Wills Is Still the King", all of which feature a slow, rumbling momentum that contrasts with the somewhat languid ballads surrounding them.  Anyone who has dismissed country music as a result of the genre's oft-employed over-production (swelling strings, slick pop hooks, etc.) will find this album stands out in sharp relief.

Least Favorite: Let's Turn Back the Years


This LP might represent Waylon's artistic peak if you consider both commercial and critical appeal. It didn't hurt that this record contained three big hits: "Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way," "Dreaming My Dreams," and a live version of "Bob Wills is Still the King." Two of the three hits were (obviously) tributes to country music legends, although the  Hank Williams song has more to do with Waylon's bucking the Nashville system than anything else, actually. The hits are great, but as with all of Waylon's albums of the era, the non-hit tracks are great, too. This album was the first in a long string of Waylon Jennings albums that reached number one on the country charts. Excellent.

This is one of my personal favorites of Waylon I really think that this was one of his best efforts.  "Waymore's blues" and "I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired" are true Waylon.  The star of the album is " Bob Wills is still the king"
