Piano – George Winston
===========================================================================
George Winston is an iconoclastic, seemingly eccentric guy from Montana who pretty much started a whole market (Windham Hill) genre of music. Audiophiles don't care - Grandma listens to this stuff. Yeah, she does, and sometimes grandma's got better taste than you do my Wilco-loving friend. When I play this I get all misty and sentimental, before wanting to run outside into the snow where I can spin around with my blanket a 'la Linus. Yes Virginia, Vince Guaraldi's brilliant Peanuts XMas score did have a sequel. A worthy one.

If you're too tired of being burdened by all of the secular drama and financial troubles of Christmastime, then take a ride on the spiritually moving "rural coaster" that is George Winston's December. It's completely instrumental, thus uninterrupted by the corruption and greed hidden beneath every pair of vocal chords. Instead you have the pure, sensual and unadulterated sounds of nature resonating from deep within the piano. That's where the real soul, comes from.
Winston has such a knack for taking a few simple piano chords, and then slowly evolving them and escalating them into fabulously evocative soundscapes suited perfectly for the winter season. The melodies are grand, whether they're his own compositions, such as the mystifying opener "Thanksgiving", or his way of reworking traditional pieces such as "The Holly and the Ivy". In spite of the winter feel the album thrives on, the album manages to not sound cold or distant for a second. Each piano chord is struck with the utmost delicacy as to invite the listener in to stay for a while.
To whoever wants to write this off as new age, I've got a little message for you - go fuck yourself. This is folk music from America's winter heartland, and it just so happens to be on piano. It's not Yanni, for God's sakes. It's played with classical technicality and brilliance to move you, not to put you to sleep (although it does have that effect at times, but for all of the right reasons instead). An album to sip hot cocoa to without a worry on your mind. Nothing more, nothing less.

A stunning display of skill on his instrument as found on his previous albums. Not too different from Winter Into Spring, but I prefer the season that the album is based on. Put this on for background music at your next Christmas party.
