The Drifters formed a bridge between the stylings of earlier legendary vocal groups, like The Dominoes, and the rock and roll records that were just about to hit the American music scene. Clyde McPhatter's vocals bring the kind of energy that would soon be associated with rock and roll, while the beautiful backing vocals echo the vocal group past. "Honey Love" is one of the softer, more sensitive songs they recorded in this early period- an especially fertile one for the group.
"Honey Love", a swinging mambo with the beautiful voice of Clyde McPhatter, had to become a chart topper, and indeed it hit #1 (R&B) in July 1954, staying there for 8 weeks.
