This is country Rock - and a good portion of it too. Here she has teamed up with Rockpile, and with Nick Lowe as a producer.
Yhe best song however is not done with Rockpile - a stunning version of her mother's "Ring of Fire" where the trumpets are replaced by harmony guitars. Great disco/tock country.
The rest of the album is mainly with Rockpile, and it sounds like it too - only with more Country songs penned by Carlene Carter. Simply a great album where "Too Bad about Sandy" is another killer song.
=====================================================================
When Carlene Carter hooked up with Nick Lowe part of the deal was that she also inherited Dave Edmunds and the rest of Rockpile. I can only imagine all parties were satisfied by the fruits of the union, which gave Carlene her first great album (hard country that wasn't afraid to rock hard), gave Rockpile a frontperson with honest-to-god links to an American legend (Carlene is the stepdaughter of Johnny Cash), and, lastly, gave Nick Lowe a hot wife with killer legs (as evidenced by the album cover). At the time, Carlene stated that this stuff "put the c*nt back in country," and, although I'm not quite sure what she meant by that, I'll once again draw your attention to the album cover.
