Finally!! This great album has been on top of my list for 'must-have old albums in my itunes library' for years,
I don't remember this album being as good as it actually it is. It's brilliant and offers such an intelligent and mix of rock music. Sadly lost in the 'sands of time', for anyone around at the time who did not follow up on Ruts DC, what are you waiting for? Check it out now - you will not be disappointed.

The mood is murky but compelling here and The Ruts never shrink from telling the truth. It doesn't matter whether the tune is molasses-thick reggae ("Fool") or an uptempo horn-filled rocker ("Walk Or Run"), confusion is ever-present yet The Ruts' reggae undercurrent always rescues them from their own dark despair.
I love this record because of its unique overall mood which is hard to describe. It's evident that the shock caused by Malcolm Owen's suicide affected this record, as there's much sadness to be sensed here. "Mirror Smashed", "Dangerous Minds" and "Parasites" lean towards post-punk gloom, the single "Different View" is nothing less than haunting and powerful, and the faster "Slow Down" is anguished. At the same time, it's all done with style. Gary Barnacle's sax gives the album a strong tinge of soul that dominates the grooves. "Fools" is a reggae song which feels very welcomed here. "Walk Or Run" is a fast old-fashioned chug-along rocker which still carries a hint of mellowness - a fascinating combination.
The bunch of single sides and demos - some of the latter mere instrumental tracks with very faint demo vocals - that I've found make a nice dessert. Perfect record to put on in the middle of the night. That's when the "Animal Now" really comes to life.
