=====================================================================
Jim Morrison wasn´t The Doors, like some people think, and here John, Robby and Ray prove that. However, Jim was pretty important piece of this group. So what I want to say is that this ain´t any as great as their previous works, but it´s clear that John, Robby and Ray CAN make good and enjoyable music without their former frontman and vocalist. And that proves how excellent musicians they were. But still many people don´t know that.
"In the Eye of the Sun", especially "Ships w/ Sails", "Down on the Farm" and "Wandering musician" are the best songs of this album. The rest I found ok or average...
======================================================================
I dont care what anyones says this album is epic! they didnt need Jim Morrison for this, he would have messed this up big time!
=======================================================================
This is the first of the two albums that The Doors released after Jim Morrison had left the band (some may think that he died but that's not the case :P). Manzarek and Krieger are on vocals. John Densmore plays drums, but he doesn't sing in any of the songs. This album is extremely underrated and I found it very good.
Here are many wonderful masterpieces like the kick-ass opener "In the Eye of the Sun", maybe my favourite song in this album "Ships w/ Sails" and the rocker "I'm Horny, I'm Stoned". I like all of the songs very, very much.
Of course The Doors needs Morrison's voice, lyrics and mysterious charisma, because he was 1/4 of the group. But with this album the remaining members of The Doors proved that they can rock very well without Jim too. First stereo pressing.
======================================================================
You're right, gerrym, absolutely right! Queen, The Doors, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - they have all the same problem. Lead vocalists always symbolize their bands. Hard to count all the rotten tomatoes Queen were thrown when they were reunited with Paul Rodgers.
The Doors after Jim's death didn't disband, and it's already a sensation. Tightrope Ride had to become a hit! It didn't become because people looked (and still look) at the second Doors' lineup as at a headless body.
The potential hits here: Tightrope Ride, Down On The Farm, Variety Is The Spice Of Life.
=======================================================================
The only problem with this album was the band's name. This is not the Doors. Had they called themselves by any other name, they may have been very succesful. I've seen this happen many times, a dominent lead singer exits and the rest of the band continues on with the same name. It's not a formula for success. Too bad, this is a great album otherwise.
=======================================================================
A band in transition. Here it's obvious that The Doors aren't quite
ready to leave their established path behind- in fact, some of this
material sounds so similar to their earlier work it makes me wonder
if more than one track ('Tightrope Ride') wasn't perhaps being readied
while Jim was still kicking. While this stuff is excellent, it's the
tracks where Ray, Robbie and John begin to venture into their own
territory that makes Other Voices an unsung classic. But, it
was their next and final album (Full Voices) that really showed
what this band was capable of.
To address a common criticism of these two Doors albums:
True, Morrison isn't present. But he also isn't present on 99.99% of
recorded music, is he? Does that make, say, everything else he isn't on crap?
Listen to what the other guys could do. I for one think Ray Manzarek
is severely underrated in every possible aspect.
======================================================================
WOW! THE DOORS RELEASED 2 MORE ALBUMS AFTER JIM MORRISON'S DEATH AS A TRIO. THE ALBUM'S TITLE REFERRED TO THAT THE VOCALS WERE BY THE SEPARATE BAND MEMBERS, AND ALSO THE DOORS ALWAYS HAVE BEEN A CONTROVERSIAL BAND CLAIMING TO BE "OTHER VOICES". THE FIRST SINGLE TO BE RELEASED FROM THIS ALBUM WAS "TIGHTROPE RIDE" AND IT'S LYRICS REFER TO THE INSECURE SITUATION OF THE BAND AFTER JIM MORRISON'S DEATH. RAY MANZAREK'S VOICE IS OF COURSE NO COMPARISON TO JIM'S, BUT THE INDIVIDUAL BAND MEMBERS HAVE A UNIQUE SOUND OF THEIR RESPECTIVE INSTRUMENTS. IN TIGHTROPE RIDE THE UNIQUE ORGAN SOUND OF RAY MANZAREK STANDS OUT, AND IT QUITE A CHEERFUL NUMBER, WITH SUDDEN CHANGES. THE SLEEK GUITAR SOUND OF ROBBY KRIEGER COMES OUT IN EACH SINGLE DOORS NUMBER, AND ALSO ON THIS ALBUM. I PERSONNALY SHARE THIS ALBUM AS A PLEASANT SURPRISE. SHIPS /W SAILS IS THE MASTERPIECE WITH LONG INSTRUMENTAN SOLO'S, LIKE CLASSICAL DOORS TITLES, FOR INSTANCE LIGHT MY FIRE AND RIDERS ON THE STORM. THIS NUMBER WAS RELEASED AS A SINGLE IN HOLLAND AND DID QUITE WELL. I LIKE THE INSTRUMENTAL OVERALL MELODY OF THIS MUSICPIECE. LATER JIM MORRISON BECAME A ROCK 'N ROLL MYTH AND A RESULT THESE 2 POST JIM MORRISON ALBUMS TUMBLED INTO OBSCURITY. THE DOORS MYTH HAD TO BE SOLD WITH A STRONG MARKETING POLICY, AND THEREBY THE DOORS LIVE ALBUM COVER CHANGED AND THESE TWO ALBUMS DID NOT GET A WIDE CD COVERAGE. THIS IS A BIG SHAME. LIKE ALL OTHER DOORS ALBUMS THE MORE YOU LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM THE MORE YOU LIKE IT. I JUST ADORE THESE TWO DOORS ALBUMS
