This was released in JUNE of 1966, but listed here as from July, due to its inclusion in a July issue of Billboard on the "New Releases" page (seems to me it would still be considered a new release in July if it actually hit the shelves in June, no?). This collection's main claim to fame is its inclusion of 3 tracks by The Powerhouse with Eric Clapton guesting. My information indicates Clapton was not an original member of that band, but recorded these tracks with them backing him. Perhaps most notable of these is an original (for Clapton) version of "Crossroads". This was recorded very early in Clapton's recording history, just after his first iconic appearance with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, and he had not yet spread his wings in a lead guitar capacity. Consequently, this version finds him relegated to a purely rhythm capacity, while the lead instrument is the harmonica. But the rest of the material found on here is all exclusive to this release as well. And all of the artists were near the beginning of fairly prolific recording careers. Most of the songs are blues, though The Lovin' Spoonful's input would be better described as pop.

For a very long time, this collection was about the only place you could find the 3 sole recordings by stillborn supergroup The Powerhouse (Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Jack Bruce). One can now find those tracks, remastered, on the Jack Bruce box set

For all it's worth, there's true grit and urgency to this comp. Interesting to hear an alternate version of "Can't Keep From Crying". Tom Rush even took off his jacket for this one.
